Sumerian Cuneiform Inscribed Clay Document-Tablet with Stamped Inscribed Cylinder Seal , c. 2000 B.C. (Sumerian Clay Tablet) Item number: 21.17864 Item category: - Cuneiform & Tablets Size: 8.6 cm L - 3 7/16” Price: US$ 1600 With a total of 25 lines of Sumerian cuneiform on obverse and reverse. The text is a document c.2000 B.C. listing small consignments of domestic animals being sent or received from a government or temple stockyard, with the human escort named. The whole surface is rolled with the scribe’s cylinder seal to show the inscription. It is not preserved clearly anywhere, so it has not yet been read. The date of the tablet is preserved in not very clear script at the end of the reverse, and the month is sure: “month: festival of Shulgi”, but the year is only partly clear, and seems to be not previously known: “Shu-..., the King, made a ... of lapis and gold for goddess Damgalnunna”. The seal design shows a seated deity, and the human seal owner being introduced by a Lamma goddess, with a monkey as a filler. Material : Terracotta Culture : Sumerian, c. 2000 B.C. Condition : Broken in two and repaired Display stand included Provenance: Bonham’s auction, previously property of an Australian private collection, acquired in 1980, and formerly collection of Mr. J. Giltman, who began collecting in the 1950s and was a retired antique dealer in Balaclava, Victoria, Australia.»
